Those who are in love with Hvar would say anytime! But if we had to narrow it down, here’s how it goes: Late June and Late August: The perfect balance. The summer vibe is in the air, but without overwhelming crowds. You can enjoy everything Hvar has to offer without needing to book everything far in advance. July and Early August (Peak Season): For those who love the hustle and bustle when Hvar becomes "a world in itself," this is the time to visit. Be prepared for queues at popular attractions like the Blue Cave. May, September, and October (For Nature Lovers): Pre- and post-season months are ideal for those seeking tranquility. May and September are especially beautiful, with warm days (air temperatures below 30°C and sea temperatures above 21°C) perfect for exploring, seaside walks, and swimming. Nights are fresh, and a gentle breeze invites you to turn off the AC, open your windows, and soak in the scents of the Mediterranean. Keep in mind: Construction work typically lasts until May 10th and resumes mid-October. However, these months still offer a peaceful atmosphere with milder crowds and ideal conditions to explore the natural beauty of Hvar.

As Hvar has become a more attractive vacation destination, the number of ferry and catamaran lines has grown significantly. Three main companies operate routes to Hvar: Jadrolinija, Krilo, and TP Line, with the most connections available during the summer months. From Split, you can take a direct catamaran from Split Harbor to Hvar Town, which takes about 1 hour. If you’re arriving at Split Airport, there’s no direct public transport to Hvar, but you can arrange a private boat transfer or take a taxi/shuttle to the harbor and continue by catamaran or ferry. For those traveling by car, head to Stari Grad, a town 15 minutes from Hvar Town, where the ferry port is located. During peak season, it’s essential to purchase tickets a few days in advance to secure your spot. If you’re coming from southern Croatia, the Drvenik to Sućuraj ferry is a convenient option. This smaller ferry operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and tickets are valid for the day of purchase. The crossing takes just 30 minutes, but you may need to wait in line to board. Once you arrive at Sućuraj, it’s about a 1.5-hour drive to Hvar Town. From Dubrovnik, you can take a catamaran that typically stops at Korčula and Mljet along the way. The journey lasts about 4 hours and offers fewer connections compared to Split-Hvar routes. A few additional tips: The number of tickets available online is often limited. Even if tickets appear sold out on the internet, you may still find them at physical sales points. In case of strong winds, especially jugo, catamaran routes can be canceled. It’s best to check directly at the harbor for updates, as online platforms may not notify passengers via email about cancellations.

If you’re staying in Hvar Town, chances are you won’t need a car. Here’s why: Compact and Walkable: Hvar Town offers plenty to see and do, but it’s relatively small. You can walk from one end of the town to the other in just 30 minutes. Car-Free Zones: The old town is a car-free zone, meaning all you need for exploring is a pair of comfortable shoes. Parking Challenges: Streets in Hvar Town are narrow, and if your accommodation doesn’t include a parking spot, finding a free space—especially during the peak season—can be challenging. Focus on the Sea: The biggest attractions, such as the Pakleni Islands and Blue Cave, are best explored by boat. We recommend spending more time on the water than on the road. Convenient Transport: Catamaran connections are more frequent than car ferries, making it easier to arrive on the island without a vehicle. However, if you’d like to visit some of the island’s more remote and scenic spots—such as Zaraće Bay, Dubovica Beach, or Pakomina Bay—or explore the lavender fields, and charming towns like Stari Grad, Vrboska, or Jelsa, renting a car, quad, or scooter is a great option. A single day is usually enough to enjoy this type of adventure and experience a different side of Hvar.

Unfortunately, Uber is not available on the island of Hvar. As a result, many visitors comment that taxi prices are relatively high. Taxi Services: The main taxi station is located just past the main square and St. Stephen's Cathedral, near the bus station, about a 5–10 minute walk from the harbor. There’s no need to call a taxi in advance, as there are always taxis waiting. Prices: Trips within Hvar Town: €25–30. Hvar Town to the ferry port in Stari Grad: €50. Tip for Arrivals: If you prefer not to use a taxi upon arrival, keep in mind that Hvar Town is situated on a hill. Just steps away from the main square, the streets turn into uphill paths with staircases, which can make carrying luggage challenging. Porter Services: For luggage transfer, porters charge approximately €40 for up to 4 people or €60 for groups larger than 4. By planning your transport and luggage needs in advance, you can avoid surprises and enjoy a smoother start to your stay in Hvar.
